Cal Byrne is a freelance news and sports journalist originally from Dublin, Ireland. He’s been working with London World since October 2022, and regularly writes on subjects such as crime, transport, food and drink, culture and politics.
Cal has been working as a journalist in London since 2014, and has previously had pieces published in The Independent, Evening Standard, MyLondon, Al Jazeera, Liverpool Echo and Manchester Evening News. He’s a lifelong Chelsea fan and occasionally makes trips to Stamford Bridge to watch the Blues when not covering news shifts at weekends.
Cal studied economics and political science at Trinity College Dublin before moving to the UK to pursue a career in media. He’s lived in London for most of his post-university life, apart from a year spent teaching English in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Cal’s previously worked in culture journalism, spending a period covering live gigs, writing album reviews, in-depth features and film reviews. This was particularly apt as his first period of work experience in journalism at age 16 involved being sent to the cinema to review a mediocre film and he thought: “I could get used to this”.
