Chelsea were the Premier League’s highest spenders last summer and they certainly didn’t stop there as they continued to break records in January.
The Blues currently sit 10th in the league table and were in need of some reinforcements so Todd Boehly splashed a further £23 million on some of Europe’s most exciting players. A big chunk of that came from Chelsea’s dramatic transfer deadline day acquisition of World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez for a staggering £106.8m.
The next highest-spending team was Southampton (£60.75m), while Arsenal and Liverpool were the only other ‘big six’ clubs to reach double figures in January.
Here is how we have ranked Chelsea’s transfer window signings compared to the rest of the English top flight...
The next highest-spending team was Southampton (£60.75m), while Arsenal and Liverpool were the only other ‘big six’ clubs to reach double figures in January.
13. Brighton & Hove Albion - 7
IN: Mullins, Buonanotte, Ayari. OUT: Trossard, Connolly, Khadra, Miller, Turns, Beadle, Tsoungui, Spong, Furlong, Tolaj, Duffy - Brighton didn’t bring in many new faces in January and they did lose Leandro Trossard, however keeping Moises Caicedo at the club is more important than any new signing. The midfielder could prove to be the difference between European football and just a top half finish for them.
14. Manchester United - 7
IN: Butland, Weghorst, Sabitzer. OUT: Ronaldo, Shoretire, Savage, McNeill, Bernard, Tuanzebe - While Wout Weghorst isn’t the most exciting signing, I think the Dutchman will do the job where needed until they can bring someone in in the summer. Meanwhile, United’s quickfire loan deal for Marcel Sabitzer following Christian Eriksen’s injury was very smart.
15. Nottingham Forest - 7
IN: Danilo, Scarpa, Wood, Felipe, Navas, Shelvey. OUT: Bowler, Taylor, Donnelly, Mbe Soh, Konate, Aguilera - After a turbulent summer window, Forest haven’t slowed down this time round but have made some much more sensible signings. The experience of Chris Wood and Jonjo Shelvey could prove vital for the rest of the season, while Keylor Navas is definitely a brilliant replacement for the injured Dean Henderson.
