Chelsea were the Premier League’s highest spenders last summer and they certainly didn’t stop there as they continued to break records in January.
The Blues currently sit 10th in the league table and were in need of some reinforcements so Todd Boehly splashed a further £23 million on some of Europe’s most exciting players. A big chunk of that came from Chelsea’s dramatic transfer deadline day acquisition of World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez for a staggering £106.8m.
The next highest-spending team was Southampton (£60.75m), while Arsenal and Liverpool were the only other ‘big six’ clubs to reach double figures in January.
Here is how we have ranked Chelsea’s transfer window signings compared to the rest of the English top flight...
The next highest-spending team was Southampton (£60.75m), while Arsenal and Liverpool were the only other ‘big six’ clubs to reach double figures in January.
17. Leicester City - 7.5
IN: Kristiansen, Tete, Opoku, Souttar. OUT: Hirst, Nelson, Stolarczyk, Opoku, Perez, McAteer, Albrighton - After a very disappointing summer transfer window, Leicester fans will be much more pleased this time round. After netting six goals in Ligue 1 whilst on loan with Lyon this season, Tete could be an impressive addition to the Foxes’ attack, while they have also done well to bolster a struggling defence.
18. Wolves - 7.5
IN: Cunha, Lemina, Sarabia, Dawson, Bentley, Gomes. OUT: Guedes, Campana, Corbeanu, Sarkic, Silva, Hoever, Smith, Campbell, O’Shaughnessy - Wolves have struggled in the transfer market in recent years but this one is actually looking a lot more promising for them. Their previous struggle for goals should be aided by the arrival of Cunha and Sarabia, while Dawson is a solid addition at the back.
19. Leeds United - 8
IN: Wober, Rutter, McKennie, Monteiro. OUT: Klich, Hjelde, McCalmont, Dean, Drameh, Gelhardt, Llorente - Leeds United’s transfer window has been exceptional and the arrival of Weston McKennie is a brilliant bit of business. If Georginio Rutter’s transfer pays off then he could be the difference between staying up and relegation.
20. Chelsea - 8
IN: Fernandez, Mudryk, Badiashile, Fofana, Santos, Felix, Madueke, Gusto. OUT: Sharman-Lowe, Gusto, Soonsup-Bell, Casadei, Jorginho, Humphreys - While it’s hard to ignore how much money Chelsea spent in January, they have definitely brought in a few players that could easily save their season. In fact, their new-look team could put them in the title race for the next campaign.
