West Ham's hectic summer transfer window could be set for a dramatic closing act

It’s only five days until the summer transfer window closes but West Ham have been tipped to bid for one more attacking star. Despite signing Niclas Fullkrug for £27 million earlier on in the summer, Julen Lopetegui’s side have been linked with a move for the former Chelsea star and current Roma striker Tammy Abraham as they hope to build on Saturday’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Abraham, 26, is unlikely to be the Serie A club’s first choice of striker this summer, having spent a large portion of the 2023/24 campaign on the sidelines through injury. While his lack of game time was out of his control last season, Roma have recently acquired La Liga’s top scorer and ex-Girona star Artem Dovbyk, indicating the 11-time England international’s time as Roma’s number one is over.

The former Swansea striker was linked with AC Milan earlier this summer but such interest has waned, while the Italian side are aware that convincing Abraham of a move to Saudi Arabia is unlikely. However, it is West Ham that have been set to swoop in with the Italian sports journalist Gianluca di Marzio taking to X to claim the Irons have ‘made contact’ with Roma over a potential signing.

Since bringing the German footballer Fullkrug to the London Stadium, the Irons are not without their forward options. However, with all three forwards over 30 (Fullkrug, Danny Ings and Michail Antonio), Abraham could bring some much needed youth to a front line which has often struggled to see the best form from it’s occupants.

Roma paid Chelsea £34m for Abraham in 2021 and it is imagined that with the star under contract until 2026, the Italian side will be seeking a fee higher than the £27m that was spent on Fullkrug if they are to part with him. Additionally, with the former Aston Villa loan star being four-and-a-half years younger than West Ham’s German purchase, a higher valuation is unlikely to be much of a surprise.

After scoring 26 Premier League goals, the former Blues academy star enjoyed a blistering debut season in Serie A scoring 27 goals - an first-year tally that had not been seen before by the Giallorossi. However, since suffering an injury in 2023, Abraham’s focus has been recovery and it remains to be seen whether the ex-Bristol City loan striker can once again produce the magic that has been in Serie A.
