Tottenham in 'advanced talks' over summer deal for £25m Bundesliga star

Timo Werner was brought to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on loan in January and it would now appear head coach Ange Postecoglou wishes to keep him at N17 for at least another season - but not on a permanent deal.

The Spurs boss is hopeful of adding more firepower to his forward line and extending Werner’s loan would represent a cost-effective move from the north London side. Werner, 28, has scored just two Premier League goals in 13 appearances but he has offered a versatile option in attack, capable of playing out wide as well as through the middle.

According to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are now in ‘advanced talks’ with the Bundesliga club to extend the German international’s loan deal until June 2025:

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Romano wrote: “Tottenham advance in talks to keep Timo Werner at the club for one more season, extending loan from RB Leipzig. New loan deal would be valid from July 2024 to June 2025 with same conditions of loan deal agreed in January. Werner now expected to stay at THFC.”

Werner’s move in January initially included an option to buy with the clause set at around £15 million. However, it would appear the Australian boss’s recruitment team are exploring alternative options in order to keep the German star at the club without having to offer up the full £15m.

The past six months have not been Werner’s first Premier League experience, of course. Following a four year stint with RB Leipzig, the forward moved to Chelsea in 2020 and would make 56 Premier League appearances for them, scoring ten goals in the process.

He stayed two years at Stamford Bridge, scoring in the club’s 5-4 Champions League quarter-final defeat to Real Madrid in April 2022, before returning to Germany. On his return to RB Leipzig, he became the first player to score a century of goals for the club after his brace against Bochum put his tally up to 101 goals in 169 games across all competitions.

The former VfB Stuttgart star also has 57 international appearances, with 24 goals to his name, but missed out on the 2022 Fifa World Cup through injury. He has also missed out on selection for the provisional Euros 2024 squad, with muscular injuries curtailing the end of his 2023/24 domestic campaign.
