'Take a step back' - Daniel Levy sent Ange Postecoglou sack message amid Tottenham struggles
Tottenham are in a tricky moment with injuries taking their toll and pressure starting to build on Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham have been urged to avoid rushing into a decision over Ange Postecoglou amid a poor run of form which has seen the North London club drop into the bottom half. Spurs are currently in 11th after another frustrating result last time out, conceding late to draw against Wolves.
Injuries have decimated Tottenham, with Postecoglou having to play youngster Archie Gray at centre-back while also patching up other positions. Still, only seven points separate Spurs from sixth place, so all is not lost with half of the season still to play.
European spots still in play for Spurs
That’s something National World’s James Trembath has highlighted in one of our latest videos, which you can see at the top of this page. “Well, I think if we sort of take a step back and we look at where we are in terms of the season, we're top, albeit top of the bottom half just, so we're not a million miles off in terms of the league,” he said. “We're lightyears away obviously at the moment from being in the top two or three but actually we get a few players back, we put a run together, we get support from the board in the transfer window which is another matter and we get players in quickly, things could turn.
“I don't know if you remember at the start of the season I did always say things would be a slow burn this year, I did think we'd be better in the second half of the season. We're in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup of course, albeit a very, very tough game against Liverpool to come and that's going to be a really tough game and a tough ask with the squad depth that we have at the moment and we're in a decent position in Europe so I think that's probably the sort of saving graces at the moment and I think the other thing is the lack of available alternatives.”
Recruitment key to Spurs revival
With so many injuries, however, new signings are a likely requirement to a revival, with Tottenham clearly needing more depth. The question now is whether Daniel Levy is willing to back Postecoglou with more cash amid that building pressure on the Australian. Trembath added: “Spurs fans signed up for a painful rebuild, now it's extremely painful at the moment and the question is have we as a fan base got the nerve to see this through? Has the board and Daniel Levy got the nerve to see it through? I'm not sure. I think if we keep dropping points to the likes of Wolves, Ipswich, Crystal Palace, with respect to those teams, it won't keep him in a job for very much longer.”
“But whether we need to just see it through to the summer and see where we're at, I think he deserves the time. As I say, we've changed the squad dramatically, we're still in that sort of facelift period, we need to let new players bed in, the youngsters come good but we do need big support in January and I think that will be pretty telling. But I think the other thing that's pretty telling as well is that the players seem to be behind the manager, which is always a good sign, and the fans seem to be behind him largely.
“I think there is, of course, like you say, on X and social media, there is a proportion who want him out. But I think inside the stadium, I was at one of the games recently at Ipswich and the sense of feeling was still, we were still with Ange, the recent defeat against Liverpool, the crowd was singing his name. There was a few boos against Wolves, I think that was for the club in general. So it will be interesting, I think the big question is will Daniel Levy hold his nerve? I hope he does and I hope he backs Ange in the transfer window because at the end of the day, we recycle another manager and we just go back to square one, which is no good for anyone.”
