The Lillywhites might have been let off though following Arsenal’s 1- defeat at the St Mary’s, which means Spurs remain fourth, three points ahead of the Gunners but having played a game more.

Midfielder Yves Bissouma put up a midfield clinic while the likes of Moisés Caicedo and Leandro Trossard  looked a class above every one in the middle of the pitch in white.

After the game, pacy winger Tariq Lamptey revealed they had executed the game plan to perfection and limited Tottenham by playing as unit.

The 21-year-old Brighton winger told LondonWorld.com: “The boys played fantastic today and It was a really good performance all round.

“We got confidence from the performance from last week and we dug deep today and every one was fantastic and we were happy with the result. It’s not easy to come to a place like this so we were happy.

“To be fair we worked on a lot of stuff on the training ground to try and we applied that and replicated that in the game with our pressing because we knew we had to get it spot on if we were to get something from the game.

“Now we just have to take it game by game and look at every individual opposition and try to do your best in every game and try and get your best from there.

“They are a top team with World class players all over the pitch so we just had to make sure that we played as a together and try to implement our game plan which eventually brought us the results.”

Tottenham will now hope to return to winning ways when they travel to Brentford who guaranteed their Premier League status for next season with a win at Watford.

The Bees will host the Lillywhites with virtually nothing lose and everything to gain while Spurs will be looking over their shoulders knowing anything but three points could be damaging to their Champions League ambition.
