What Antonio Conte said

When asked about working with Dele Alli, Tottenham manager Antonio Conte said: “I know Dele and remember when I was Chelsea manager and we were winning 13 games and we played against Tottenham and he scored twice and we (Chelsea) lost.

“I know his qualities, but I don’t really like to talk about an individual player as I like to speak about the group.

“I know that so many things happened in the past but that is the past we have to concentrate and work and there is a new manager so everyone will start from zero.

“Every player will have to show me why they want to start a match and then I will make the decision from there, but as of now I have seen a lot of things and they will all have a chance to show me.”

Antonio Conte also answered a question on if the Tottenham job will be the most challenging of his career.

“I thought that this club gave me the opportunity to do what I like,” the new boss added.

“Usually when I know in my life, I know only this word, because if you want to reach important targets you need to work and for sure this club gives me this possibility.

“To work in the way that I want. But I know that we need to take a bit of time, because in the Premier League now I think there is a gap with at least four teams.

“But this situation must be an incentive for us to work harder, to try to start to work to close this gap and to start to think that we have to be competitive and then to try to fight for the title.

“At the moment, honestly, I can’t tell you that this team is ready to fight for the title or we have many teams at this moment that are more stable.

“In football, not as a club, because this club I think is super, super stable.

“But on the pitch, I think we need to work to improve our level and to try to be closer to these teams that are showing to be very, very strong.

“For this reason, I repeat, I need time but I’m not scared about this because in my life I always work very, very hard to reach the target and to enjoy with the club a title.

“But at the same time, we have to know the reality - we must be focused on the present and to have a vision for the present and also for the future, to be something important together.”

His first Premier League match is away at Everton on Sunday.
