Tomkin has been training well and keeping a professional outlook despite not getting into the team, but the defender was left disappointed after finding out he was not starting against Manchester United.

Obviously disappointed that Joel Ward, a right-back was shifted into central defence to cover for the injured Guehi with Nathaniel Clyne playing in at right back.

Palace have a club policy which states that all players should be at the final game of the season regardless of whether they were in the team or named in the stands, but a disappointed Tomkins could not hold it and left Selhurst quietly before a ball was kicked last Sunday.

The experienced Tomkins still has a year on his contract but his recent injury record which has culminated in limited playing time might suggest it may be right to look for a new challenge elsewhere.

The direction the club is taking by bringing young players also gives little hope for a resurgence next season, and a big decision will have to be made in the summer.

There was another disappointment with long-serving defender Martin Kelly who bid farewell to the team via Twitter did not get minutes on the pitch to say a proper goodbye.

Kelly, who posted an emotional message to Palace fans, was hoping that with Palace leading and almost certain to win the game, Vieira would have thrown him in to have one last feel of the turf at Selhurst but the manager opted against it.

His departure leaves only Joel Ward and Wilfried Zaha as the longest serving members of the team.

The 32-year-old said: “I came into a dressing room full of big characters and our top priority was always to compete in the Premier League. We did that.

“I feel now with the current manager and group of players, you guys have the best chance of going even further the next few seasons.

“Special memories me and my family will enjoy forever. Enjoy the summer guys and we look forward to seeing you guys in the future.”
