He rose up through the academy with the Eagles after joining as a youngster back in 2003. The attacker was a key player for the London club at various youth levels before he was handed a chance in the first-team.

Crystal Palace gave him his debut in December 2007 in a Championship fixture against rivals QPR. He then went on to make 141 appearances in all competitions and chipped in with 13 goals.

Scannell, who is an ex-Republic of Ireland youth international, left Selhurst Park in 2012 for Huddersfield Town. He then went on to spend six years with the Yorkshire outfit and fired nine goals in 172 appearances, helping them gain promotion to the Premier League under David Wagner.

He then played for Burton Albion, Bradford City and Blackpool before rocking up at Grimsby. The Croydon-born has spent the past three campaigns with the Mariners and helped them win the National League play-offs last year. However, Paul Hurst’s side have opted against extending his stay at Blundell Park and he will become available for nothing.

In other news, ex-Crystal Palace midfielder Neil Danns has become the new assistant manager at Tranmere Rovers in League Two. He has left his role as manager at Macclesfield to move back into the Football League.
