Former Chelsea, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace striker announces retirement aged 36

Former Chelsea and Crystal Palace striker Loic Remy has announced his retirement from the game. He has decided to call time on his playing career at the age of 36. As covered in a report by GetFrenchFootballNews, the player broke the news on Prime Video. His last club was Brest last season.

Remy penned a short-term deal with the Ligue 1 side in February. However, he wasn’t offered an extension by his previous team and has now decided to hang up his boots.

He started his career as a youngster with spells at Lyon, Lens, Nice and Marseille. The ex-France international, who made 30 caps for his country, moved to London in January 2013 to initially link up with QPR.

Remy went on to make 16 appearances for the R’s altogether and scored six goals. He then had a loan spell away from the Hoops at Newcastle United before Chelsea snapped him up.

It has since turned out that he nearly joined Liverpool before he joined the Blues. He said: “I was supposed to sign for Liverpool. I went for the medical in Boston, then apparently I failed the medical. For me, everything happens for a reason, which means at the end of the day, Chelsea. We had a fantastic season.”

He spent two years on the books at Stamford Bridge and found the net on 12 occasions. Crystal Palace then came calling for him on loan in 2016 but he didn’t score in eight matches for the Eagles.

The attacker left England after his stint at Selhurst Park and has since played all over Europe. He has played for Las Palmas, Getafe, Lille, Çaykur Rizespor and Adana Demirspor but has now decided to end his playing days.

Remy now has a decision to make on what to do next. It will be interesting to see if he stays in football in a coaching capacity or moves into something else.
