Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca might have criticized Reece James’s leadership skills, but he left no doubt about how he rates his captain by naming him in the starting lineup against Newcastle. James played a vital role in what was a pivotal win.
He has battled muscle injuries over the last two years, but the club is determined to get him back to not only being fit but also constantly available, as he is one of the best full-backs in the game when fit.

Hide AdBefore the injuries tried to derail his career, he was explosive and regularly charged up and down his flank. However, it seems Maresca has limited that to ensure he doesn't have to stretch his muscles as much, thereby reducing the risk of injury.
James now essentially forms a back three when playing as a full-back, allowing Malo Gusto, who was picked at right-back, to move into midfield and join the attack when Chelsea needs an extra body when attacking. Some have suggested that James would be better in midfield, as he has a brilliant touch and can operate in tight spaces.
But this new way of using him allows him to remain a right-back who can defend and find passes, without being burdened with the responsibility of constantly running up and down the pitch, which could risk further injury.
One of the things that has been consistent at Chelsea under the Italian manager is that they always have a tactical tweak, mostly done to create an overload, which is quite interesting.

Newcastle scored through Alexandre Isak, but it didn’t mean much, as Chelsea recorded their second home win of the season, which has taken them to fourth place in the league table.
