Chelsea player ratings vs Newcastle: 'saviour' 8/10, plenty of 7s but one 'quiet' 6/10 in chaotic win

Chelsea passed their latest test in the Premier League by winning a tightly contested encounter against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge 3-1. Nicolas Jackson scored his sixth league goal of the campaign to give his team the lead, assisted by a brilliant ball from Pedro Neto, leaving Jackson with only the finish to apply.
Newcastle reacted well to that, and Alexandre Isak got the equalizer after some really good work from former Chelsea academy star Lewis Hall. But Chelsea took their game to the next level in the second half as Levi Colwill and Romeo Lavia combined to set up Cole Palmer for his goal.

In what was a very entertaining game, Chelsea once again showed they are making progress under Maresca by winning a match they would likely have dropped points in last season. Below is how we rated the Chelsea players:
Robert Sanchez - 6
Kept giving the ball away midway through the first half, but he was very good with crosses and generally dealt well with strikes from distance. His handling and positioning are very good, though he could improve his footwork.
Malo Gusto - 7
Tasked with coming into midfield as well as joining the attack. He did well generally, even though his passing could have been better.

Hide AdReece James - 8
The thing with James at the moment is that every game he completes is generally a good one. He topped it off with two goal-line clearances to help his team.
Wesley Fofana - 7
Played the game with a heavily strapped knee but performed very well despite it. Incredible.
Levi Colwill - 7
Battled well for Chelsea’s second goal. He would be happy with the role he played in that.
Romeo Lavia - 7
A brilliant player to have, and he justified the manager’s decision to pick him ahead of Enzo Fernandez with his role in Cole Palmer's goal.

Hide AdMoises Caicedo - 7
Strong and solid when he needed to be. His passing is underrated, and many times during the game, he picked the right pass. If hard work were a person, it would be him.
Cole Palmer - 7
Brilliant finish for the goal that was ruled out by VAR. Then dusted himself off and scored early in the second half. Every game, he does something that reminds everyone he’s just so special.
Pedro Neto - 7
Brilliant pace to create the assist for Chelsea’s first goal, which Jackson scored. He then kept on beating Livramento at every opportunity. Unlucky not to score as his shot cannoned off the post.
Noni Madueke - 6
Generally a quiet game for the often very dangerous Madueke. Not that he had a bad game, but he just wasn't at his most threatening best.

Scored again, six now for a man many say doesn't score enough. Held up play well and always looked dangerous on the turn.
Kept things tight and moving when he came on.
Thought he won a penalkty but VAR overturned it.
