Arsenal's chances of Premier League title shift as predicted final points forecast v Liverpool & Chelsea

Arsenal moved to second in the Premier League with victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday

Arsenal made the most of Liverpool’s draw with Nottingham Forest as the Gunners came from 1-0 down to beat North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Wednesday night.

After a barrage of early pressure from the hosts’ Son Heung-min’s deflected shot gave Spurs the lead after 25 minutes. However, two goals in four minutes in the latter stages of the first half proved decisive. An own-goal from Dominic Solanke from an Arsenal corner was followed by a fierce strike from Leandro Trossard, although Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky will have been disappointed to allow the shot to go through his gloves.

The Gunners missed some chances in the second half to make the game safe and were almost punished in stoppage time when Pedro Porro struck the post. The result puts Mikel Arteta’s side within four points of Liverpool, who were held to a 1-1 draw at the City Ground on Tuesday. The Reds do have a game in hand, however, as they face Merseyside rivals Everton next month.

What the managers said after Arsenal 2-1 Tottenham

After the game Arteta reflected: "Outstanding today. From the first minute we were really at it, really intense. We played with a real purpose to hurt them. We created an unbelievable atmosphere. We know how important the game is. It's a gift we can make the supporters very happy. The attitude we played with, not feeling sorry for ourselves, was phenomenal. We played 120 minutes three days ago.

"We had some big chances and big situations. At the end we had to suffer more than we wanted. When you have opportunities [to close the gap] you have to take them. We are on a really consistent run in the Premier League. It's about recovery tomorrow and Aston Villa on Saturday, going and going."

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said: "Yeah we could have got something but that is kind of irrelevant to the point that we were nowhere near the levels we needed to be at today. In the first half we were way too passive and let Arsenal get into a rhythm. We hung in there, we hung in there the whole game really. Second half was a bit better but nowhere near the level it needed to be. When we play well and take the game to teams then we are at our best and we didn't do that today."

Arsenal’s title hopes boosted

Ahead of the game, Opta’s predicted Premier League table had given the Gunners a 10.23% chance of winning the league. Their chances of ending their long wait for a league title have increased to 13.02%. Liverpool remain favourites with their title chances rated as 86.53% likely.

Chelsea failed to make the most of Liverpool’s draw with Forest as they were held by Bournemouth. Their Tuesday night clash at Stamford Bridge ended 2-2 and their title hopes are rated at a miniscule 0.09%. Opta consider Liverpool and Arsenal as the only genuine contenders with Manchester City given a 0.16% chance of winning a fifth-straight domestic title while Newcastle United’s chances are 0.12% and Forest’s sit at 0.08%. Arsenal are predicted to finish with around 78 points while Liverpool have been forecast for 86 points. Man City and Newcastle are tipped to make up the top four with Forest in fifth and Chelsea in sixth.
