Full report: Labour takes Wandsworth for the first time in 44 years

Joy and tears were had in the early hours of Friday morning as Sir Keir Starmer’s party turned Margaret Thatcher’s favourite council red, Lynn Rusk reports from Wandsworth Civic Suite.

Labour won control of Wandsworth Council from the Conservatives for the first time in 44 years.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan simply said: “Three words - Wandsworth Labour gain.”

The authority, known for its low council taxes, was considered a “definite loss” by Conservative insiders soon after the polls closed in Scotland, Wales and many parts of England at 10pm on Thursday evening.

The final count saw Labour win 46% of the votes, while the Conservatives gained 38%.

Cllr Simon Hogg, the new leader of Wandsworth Council, told LondonWorld: “It’s been a really good evening for us, it’s exceeded our expectations.

“I’m delighted to be surrounded by dozens of new Labour councillors who are ready to get to work.”

Cllr Ravi Govindi said: “Inevitably other events clouded the judgement of people in Wandsworth.

“Let’s not beat about the bush, the national events.”

The flagship borough has been controlled by the Conservatives since its inception in 1964.

Neither Labour or Tory sources thought that Westminster could flip, and this has turned a good night in the capital for Labour into a great one.

The party sealed the victory by winning the Tory stronghold of Hyde Park.

Previously, Labour had made gains in the new seat of Pimlico South.
