Voters in 32 London boroughs have decided on their local councillors, and who will run their council for the next four years.

A total of 1,817 seats are up for election across the city, with Labour holding 21 boroughs, the Conservatives seven, Lib Dems three and one council is under no overall control.

Waltham Forest was the first council to be declared, with the north-east London borough being controlled by Labour.

The party then went onto take the flagship council of Wandsworth, as well as Barnet and Westminster for the first time in the party’s history.

Wandsworth Tory leader: National events clouded judgement of voters

Wandsworth’s Conservative leader Cllr Ravi Govindia laid the blame of losing the flagship council to Labour squarely at the door of Boris Johnson and the national government.

The south-west London borough voted red for the first time in 44 years.

The previous council leader said his local authority was an “exceptional council” but “other events clouded the judgement of people in Wandsworth”.

Cllr Govindia told the BBC: “It looks like a low turnout, it looks like people didn’t turn up in the number we expected.

“And inevitably other events clouded the judgement of people in Wandsworth.”

When probed on what he was talking about, Cllr Govindia said: “Let’s not beat about the bush, the national events.”

He continued: “My difficulty is that we have run a exceptional council - we have cut council tax, we have frozen rents we have frozen heating bills.

“We have done exactly what the residents of Wandsworth have wanted for the last 44 years indeed.

“To find out that counts for nothing is kind of a sad reflection of local government - that that wasn’t recognised.

“On the doorstep consistently people raised the issues of central government.”

Labour won comprehensively with 59 seats out of 70.

The Lib Dems have gained two seats, taking their tally to six, and the Tories lost three seats leaving them with five councillors.

Labour celebrate historic Wandsworth win

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who lives in Tooting, and Tooting MP Dr Rosena Allin-Khan joined in the celebrations as Labour won Wandsworth Council for the first time in 44 years.

Mr Khan simply said: “Three words - Wandsworth Labour gain.”

Cllr Simon Hogg, the new leader of Wandsworth Council, told LondonWorld: “It’s been a really good evening for us - it’s actually exceeded our expectations.

“Delighted to be surrounded by dozens of new Labour councillors ready to get to work.

“It’s surprised the scale of it, how many votes we’ve got and how many councillors we’ve returned.

“But we’ve been working hard on this for months, lots of these guys have been out in the wind and the cold often on their own, so they really deserve their win.”

Two more wards declared in Barnet

Woodhouse ward elects Geof Cooke and Anne Hutton - both Labour.

Mill Hill ward elects Val Duschinsky, Elliot Simpson, and Laithe Jajeh - all Cons.

Six wards declared in Barnet

Six wards have had their results declared in Barnet.

Hendon ward elected Joshua Conway, Alex Prager and Mark Richard (all Conservative).

Finchley Church End ward elected Eva Greenspan, Jennifer Grocock and Daniel Thomas (all Cons).

Underhill ward elected Zahra Parveen and Tim Roberts (both Labour).

Labour has held the east London borough of Redbridge, the BBC has called.

After 16 wards have been declared Labour have 33 seats and the Conservatives have two.

This borough really illustrates Labour’s new dominance in the capital, as only in 2009 the Tories controlled Redbridge.

The Conservatives had been hoping to win back wards in Wanstead, however Labour held all of their councillors in that area.

Overall result: Wandsworth - Labour gain
