London New Year’s Eve fireworks cancelled for second year running

London’s famous New Year’s Eve fireworks display has been cancelled for the second year running due to “uncertainties caused by Covid”.

The display – which is typically attended by more than 100,000 people – was cancelled last year as England was under strict lockdown restrictions throughout December and January.

But despite all lockdown restrictions having now been lifted, a spokesperson for the Mayor of London has today confirmed that display will not go ahead once again this year.

The spokesperson said: “Due to the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, our world-famous New Year’s Eve display will not be held on the banks of the Thames this year.

“Last year’s successful show took place in a slightly different way due to the pandemic, and this year a number of exciting new options are being considered as part of our New Year’s Eve celebrations in London.”

Plans for a separate event to welcome in the new year in Trafalgar Square are underway, with more details to be revealed “in due course”.

A proposal was been submitted to Westminster City Council on Monday for a replacement event on December 31 at the famous square.

The application explained there will be a play, film, live music, recorded music, alcohol sales and dance events to make up for the lack of fireworks.

Last year event organisers surprised Londoners with a light show over the Shard and Tower Bridge before a giant drone display spelt out 2021 on the London skyline.
