London Marathon 2022: what roads are closed during the 2022 TCS London Marathon and when they will reopen?

As the London Marathon 2022 draws closer, organisers have confirmed the roads that will be affected during the event.

With the advent of the TCS 2022 London Marathon upon London residents, so comes a raft of road closures within the city for the safety of everyone involved.

Organisers for the London Marathon have advised that parking restrictions will commence for local residents from 12.01am on the morning of the event (October 2), but to be aware of updated road signage in the event of earlier restrictions.

Vehicle removals will start from 6am along the entire route of the London Marathon and in the event of a vehicle remover, London residents are advised to use London Council’s Trace service to find where their vehicle has been moved to.

As a general rule, organisers have asked residents affected in areas that make up the route of the London Marathon to prepare the evening before the event and move their vehicles then to avoid any problems.

What roads are going to be closed during the London Marathon 2022?

The following areas of London will have road closures and parking restrictions occur during the London Marathon 2022.

Westminster

The TCS Mini-Marathon will be taking place on October 1, with the following road closures taking place between 7.30am and 11.30pm

  • Blackfriars Underpass (westbound)
  • White Lion Hill
  • Victoria Embankment
  • Arundel Street
  • Surrey Street
  • Temple Place
  • Savoy Street
  • Northumberland Avenue
  • Whitehall Place
  • Great Scotland Yard
  • Horse Guards Avenue
  • Whitehall
  • Bridge Street (eastbound)
  • Westminster Bridge (eastbound)
  • Great George Street

St James Park

Several roads around the St James Park will also be closed during the London Marathon 2022 on Sunday, October 2.

  • The Mall/Marlborough Road: from 5am on Thursday, September 29 to 6pm on Monday, October 3
  • Spur Road/Constitution Hill/Horse Guards Road/Birdcage Walk (eastbound): from 6am on Friday, September 30 to 6am on  Monday, October 3
  • Birdcage Walk (westbound): from 7.30am on Saturday, October 1 to 06am on Monday, October 3

Canary Wharf

All roads will be closed in Canary Wharf from 8am to 7pm on Sunday, October 2. Wood Wharf Residential Estate will remain open via the 1206 Preston Road for access.

Shops and transport links will be open as usual, but London Marathon organisers recommend all residents and businesses plan ahead to minimise any potential disruption.

Greenwich

The following roads will be closed from 7am to 3pm on Sunday, October 2:

  • Romney Road
  • Creek Road (A200)
  • The most northern part of the A206, leading into the A200

If you need to leave the area in a vehicle on Sunday 2 October, London Marathon organisers recommend doing so before 7am.

Rotherhithe

The following roads in Rotherhithe will be closed from 8am to 4pm on Sunday, October 2:

  • Lower Road
  • Surrey Quays Road
  • Quebec Way
  • Salter Road
  • Brunel Road
  • Jamaica Road

Westcombe Park

A short section of Shooters Hill Road will close at 4am on Sunday, October 2 to enable London Marathon 2022 organisers to install the Start Area gantry.

The following roads will be closed from 7am on October 2:

  • Shooters Hill Road 
  • St John’s Park 
  • Old Dover Road
  • Charlton Way 
  • Vanbrugh Park 
  • Charlton Road Charlton Park Road 
  • Charlton Park Lane
  • Woolwich Road (A206)

Roads to the south of Westcombe Park are anticipated to reopen by 1pm, while roads to the north of Westcombe Park are anticipated to reopen by 3pm.

Wapping

  • The Highway will be closed from 8am to 7pm on October 2. 

Isle of Dogs

Vehicle access to and from the Isle of Dogs will be restricted from 9am to

4pm on Sunday, October 2. These roads include:

  • East Ferry Road
  • Marsh Wall
  • North Colonnade
  • South Colonnade
  • Poplar High Street
  • West India Dock Road
  • Limehouse
  • Westferry Road

If you need to drive into the Isle of Dogs between 8am and 7pm on October 2, use the A13 East India Dock Road, Leamouth Road to Leamouth Roundabout, and take Blackwall Way to access Preston’s Road.

To exit between 9am and 4pm on October 2, use Preston’s Road and Cotton Street Roundabout to access Aspen Way eastbound towards Canning Town.

When is the London Marathon 2022 taking place?

The TCS London Marathon 2022 will take place on Sunday, October 2, with start waves taking place from 08.50am (elite wheelchair men’s and women’s races), 9am (elite women’s race) and 9am (elite men’s race and mass start.)
