Tesco hit and run: Elderly man killed in supermarket car park crash

A pensioner in his 80s was killed by a van in a hit and run at a Tesco car park, police have revealed.

During an "extremely busy" afternoon in the Barnet supermarket a van crashed into an 80-year-old man walking through the car park and killed him.

The vehicle drove off and police are still hunting for the person behind the wheel.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

They have since been released pending further enquiries.

Met Police officers, paramedics and the air ambulance were called after the collision at 4.50pm on Saturday, September 24.

The man was taken to hospital but died the next day.

Det Ins Ian Watson, from the serious collision unit, said: “The car park was extremely busy with people going about their day when this collision occurred.

"If you saw anything, or captured events on dash cam or a mobile device, then please get in touch.”

A Met spokesperson said: "Police are appealing for witnesses and information following a fatal collision in Barnet.

"Officers were called following reports of a collision involving a van and a male pedestrian in the Tesco car park at the Coppetts Centre, N11.

"The man, aged in his 80s, was taken to hospital. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he died on Sunday, September 25.

"His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.”

They added: “The van involved in the collision did not stop at the scene.

“Enquiries are still ongoing to trace the person who is believed to have been driving the van at the time of the collision.

"Two men - no further details - have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

"They have been released pending further enquiries."
