Queen Elizabeth II State Funeral: what shops and services in London are closed - including Asda and Tesco

From shops to supermarkets to and department stores, here are all the opening time plans for retailers across London on the day of the Queen’s funeral.

London has faced vast numbers of mourners in recent days as hundreds of thousands saw Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II lying-in-state from Wednesday afternoon.

Now, as the day of the State Funeral arrives, customers are looking as to the extent of closures occuring.

For some, they will comply with a complete closure of stores across the United Kingdom on Monday, given its status as a Bank Holiday - however there are a number of smaller, satellite stores from bigger supermarket chains that will either re-open or remain open in order to accommodate the very large crowds that are expected for the State Funeral.

Londonworld have gathered together a list of stores that have confirmed their status on Monday September 19 and will continue to update this list once more companies have confirmed their plans.

What shops will be closed during the State Funeral on Monday?

The following supermarkets and retailers though have confirmed their plans for Monday September 19 2022:

Aldi/Lidl

All Aldi and Lidl stores will be closed for the day.

Tesco:

The largest Tesco supermarkets in London will be closed all day, while Tesco Express will be closed until 5pm.

Sainsbury’s/Argos:

All Sainsbury’s and Argos stores in London will be closed - this includes ordering groceries online and Argos’ fast track delivery.

A number of smaller Sainsbury’s Local and petrol stations will open from 5pm until 10pm, with select stores in London open for those attending the funeral in person - you can visit the Sainsbury’s store locator for additional details which shops will remain open.

Asda:

Asda stores nationally will be closed throughout the entirety of the ceremonies, however they will open again after the funeral, at 5pm.

Marks and Spencer:

Marks and Spencer have confirmed that those stores that they own will be closed all day, however with some limited exceptions - a small number of stores will be open on Monday to help those queuing but will close at 10:30am and remain closed for the day.

There are four exceptions to this rule though: four stores closest to Westminster Abbey and St. George’s Chapel will reopen after the funeral.

Those stores look to be:

  • Southbank Place - Unit 1c Southbank Place, York Road, London SE1 7ND
  • Windsor - 130 Peascod Street, Windsor SL4 1DN
  • St Thomas - Westminster Bridge Road, London SE1 7EH
  • London Victoria (Simply Food) - Victoria Mainline Station, London SW1V 1JU

Franchise partners in travel hubs and public service locations such as hospitals are likely to remain open.

Waitrose/John Lewis:

A number of Waitrose and John Lewis department stores will close on the day, but there may be exceptions for a small number of Waitrose stores on the route of the funeral processions.

These shops will close though for the funeral itself.

Morrisons:

All Morrisons stores across the country will shut all day on Monday 19 September as a mark of respect to Her late Majesty.

Some central London Co-Op stores towards Windsor will remain open during the day, however most stores will be closed until 5:00pm. Online orders and deliveries will recommence from 5:00pm also.

Primark:

All Primark stores, depots and head offices in the UK will be closed.

Apple Stores:

All Apple stores across the UK will close for the day.

WH Smith:

All WH Smith High Street stores will be closed all day, however those stores in travel hubs will be closed for the duration of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.

Halfords:

All Halfords stores, garages, support centres and mobile experts will not be operating on Monday. Any appointments due to occur in store, through Autocentres or with National Tyres will be rescheduled.

All Next stores will be closed all day.

All Zara stores will be closed all day.

All Waterstones stores will be closed.
