With worldwide celebrations expected to take place during Eid-al-Adha, here are some events taking place in London

When is Eid-al-Adha 2022?

Different to a lot of annual celebrations and recognised important dates, the date of Eid al-Adha varies every year, as Islam follows a lunar calendar.

Eid lasts for a period of three days, and this year it is expected to fall on Saturday, 9 July 2022 - but is dependent on moon sightings.

This Eid lasts for four days, meaning it would come to an end at sunset on Wednesday, 13 July this year.

What is Eid-al-Adha?

In Islam, there are two Eid celebrations.

The first of these is Eid-ul-Fitr which is celebrated at the end of the month-long fasting of Ramadan, and is a celebration to signal the end of Ramasdan.

Eid-al-Adha is the second of these, and is widely considered to be the bigger of the two.

On Eid al-Adha, the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim is remembered. Prophet Ibrahim sacrificed his son Ismail as an act of obedience to Allah’s command.

To remember his sacrifice, it is common to help the poor and needy, and give their own sacrifice which is known as Qurbani.

Like most events and celebrations, each person or family can celebrate as they wish but, traditionally, the day is spent celebrating with family, friends and loved ones, often wearing new or best attire and the giving of gifts.
