Why are fuel prices going up?

The Ukraine Russia conflict is having an impact, with the cost of oil impacting upon the cost of fuel.

Russia is one of the largest producers of oil in the world, and disruption to its shipping and production will cause a shortage, where supply struggles to keep up with demand.

The price of a barrel of Brent crude oil reached a 14 year high on March 7, 2022 when traders saw it spike at $139.

Russia is third only to Saudi Arabia and the USA for oil production - Russia produces approximately 4.5 billion barrels of oil per day.

The overall cost of oil is rising, too. This cost has risen sharply in the 12 months from January 2021, rising from around £55 per barrel to approximately £102 per barrel in February 2022.
