Eid ul-Adha 2022 timetable London: when is Islamic holiday, UK prayer times, and dates of Hajj

The Islamic celebration of Eid-al-Adha will be celebrated by Muslims around the world later this month, with many in London set to take part.

Eid-al-Adha is one of two Eid’s that muslims worldwide recognise and celebrate each year.

Ahead of the celebration, here’s all you need to know about what Eid-al-Adha is, when it is, and if the prayer times during Eid-al-Adha.

When is Eid-al-Adha 2022?

Unlike a lot of yearly celebrations, the date of Eid al-Adha varies every year, as Islam follows a lunar calendar.

Eid lasts for a period of three days, and this year it is expected to fall on Saturday, 9 July 2022 - but is dependent on moon sightings.

This Eid lasts for four days, meaning it would come to an end at sunset on Wednesday, 13 July.

What is Eid-al-Adha?

In Islam, there are two Eid celebrations. The first of these is Eid-ul-Fitr which takes place at the end of Ramadan in May.

Eid-ul-Adha is the second of these, and is widely considered to be the bigger of the two.

On Eid al-Adha, the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim is remembered. Prophet Ibrahim sacrificed his son Ismail as an act of obedience to Allah’s command.

To remember his sacrifice, it is common to help the poor and needy, and give their own sacrifice which is known as Qurbani.

How do Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Adha?

Traditionally, the day is spent celebrating with family, friends and loved ones, often wearing new or best attire and the giving of gifts.

What are the prayer times in London?

On prayer times, Islamic Relief says: “Eid Salah (prayer) takes place in the early morning (after Fajr) on the first day of Eid. Muslims are encouraged to pray in Jama’ah (congregation) with their local Muslim community on occasions such as these.”

In Islam, there are five daily prayers taking place at various times of the day, and the times below, courtesy of the East London Mosque are the prayer times for the upcoming Eid-al-Adha.

In London, as explained by the East London Mosque says: ‘Several Mosques and Islamic centres in London agreed to a common timetable for the start times for each prayer, known as the London Unified Prayer Timetable’.

What do you do when you’re ready to pray?

According to Islamic Relief, this is the process when you’re ready to pray.

• Make the intention to perform Eid prayer.
• Give the opening takbeer (‘Allahu Akbar’) with the imam.
• Say the opening supplication quietly to yourself.
• Give 3 more takbeer with the imam, raising your hands out for each.
• Listen to the imam recite Surah al-Fatihah and an additional surah.
• Say ‘Allahu Akbar’ while moving into ruku (bowing) with the imam and continue the prayer cycle as normal.
• In the second rakah, listen to the imam recite Surah al-Fatihah and an additional surah.
• Give 3 additional takbeer with the imam. After the third and final takbeer, place your hands to your sides before doing the ruku again.
• Say ‘Allahu Akbar’ while moving into the bowing position with the imam and complete the prayer cycle as normal.
