Graham Potter faces a big summer rebuild at West Ham this summer after an underwhelming end to a poor Premier League season.

West Ham manager Graham Potter was sent a bleak reminder of the mountain he must climb to turn his side around this summer after a 1-1 draw with already relegated Southampton in the Premier League last weekend.

The Hammers saw a 1-0 lead slip from their grasp in injury time, prompting striker Niclas Fullkrug to slam the team’s mentality after the final whistle. The forward said: “It’s a mentality problem. We didn’t have the motivation to push up. Not disappointed, just angry with what we did after the goal. It was difficult to bring the boys back to push up, we didn't push up anymore.

"We tried, but we didn't have the ability or the motivation to push up again. I am very, very angry that we played like this. We had some minutes where we showed what we can do against an opponent like that at home. We showed the possession we can have, that we can go in behind and have the chances to score again.

"But the motivation, sorry we were s*** and I'm very angry. It is not the first time where we score a goal and then the next goal kick we just shoot the ball long. We don't try to play football anymore.”

LondonWorld looks at what a new West Ham starting XI could be next season, if current transfer rumours come true.

Graham Potter poaches Brighton to sign centre-back

The goalkeeper spot looks set to be one where Graham Potter wants to add new blood. West Ham have been linked with Liverpool back-up Caoimhin Kelleher, but won’t be the only ones admiring the Irishman. Over the weekend, The Sun claimed that Southampton shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale could come through the door with Luis Guilherme headed to the Championship in a potential swap deal.

Max Kilman will surely continue at centre-back after £40 million was invested in him last summer while former Manchester United man Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been one of few positives this season, as too has the emergence of youngster Ollie Scarles. The Sun journalist Jack Rosser has named Brighton man Adam Webster as a potential new centre-back signing that Potter is ‘considering’ as the player enters the last 18 months of his deal on the south coast.

Former Fulham man returns to Premier League after £44m exit

Midfielders: Joao Palhinha, Angel Gomes, Sem Steijn

The biggest changes for the first full season of Potter-ball at the London Stadium could come in the centre of the park. Carlos Soler and Gudio Rodriguez are only on loan and unlikely to return while stalwart Tomas Soucek has emerged as a number one priority for David Moyes at Everton.

Angel Gomes has been heavily touted as a West Ham target with Graham Potter even said to have made a personal call to the England international, who is out of contract at Lille this summer. At the moment, Tottenham Hotspur seems a more likely destination, but there’s still a way to go until the end of that transfer saga. BILD have claimed that former Fulham star Joao Palhinha could be open to a return to the Premier League with West Ham, just a year after his £44 million switch to Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, FC Twente man Sem Steijn is another man who West Ham are supposedly ‘battling’ for.

Wingers: Jarrod Bowen, Crysencio Summerville

Striker: Niclas Fullkrug

The £27 million spent on Niclas Fullkrug last summer had looked to be a waste following an injury-ridden campaign but opinion could be turning on the big German. The striker’s honest outburst after a draw against Southampton was praised by fans and agreed with by Potter. That is perhaps, after all, the character the Hammers need to lead the line.

Mohammed Kudus has been linked with a big money move to Saudi Arabia and the club surely wouldn’t stand in the way if his insatiable release clause is met. That could leave Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville on the flanks, the latter needing to stay off the treatment table next term.
