West Ham are dreaming of European success as they prepare for the second leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final against AZ Alkmaar. The Hammers head to Holland on the back of their 2-1 win over the Eredivisie outfit in the first-leg at the London Stadium.

David Moyes’ side fell behind just before half-time when midfielder Tijjani Reijnders scored for their opponents. However, they managed to turn the match around in the second-half after goals by winger Said Benrahma and forward Michail Antonio to put them in a strong position.

West Ham are currently sat in 15th place in the Premier League and are almost safe with two games left of the season to play against Leeds United at home and Leicester City away which has allowed them to focus hard on their quest to reach a European final.

They have enjoyed their campaign overseas this term and have locked horns with the likes of FCSB, Silkeborg, Anderlecht, AEK Larnaca and Gent before reaching their current stage. It is understandable that the sheer number of games they have had to play has effected their league form.

The Europa Conference League final is being held at the Fortuna Arena in Prague, Czech Republic on Wednesday 7th June. The stadium holds 19,370 and is home to SK Slavia Prague and occasionally the Czech Republic national team.

Fiorentina play FC Basel in the other semi-final clash. The latter are currently winning 2-1 on aggregate after winning away in Italy after goals by Andy Diouf and Zeki Amdouni.

What has been said?

Hammers’ boss David Moyes has said: “We want to reach a cup final, but again we have a really difficult opponent. We have to play really well to reach the final, we’re going to have to earn it and we know that. There are no gimmes in football and any team in the semi-finals at this level have to be a good side. So we have big respect for any team who has got to this stage.”

Midfielder Tomáš Souček added: “We knew from the videos that AZ can play from the goalkeeper in a good style. We also know how they played in the Dutch league and a few games in the Conference League as well from a few clips, and we also learned a lot from the game we played as well. We were very good in the second half so that’s our biggest learning from the game.

“Since I knew at the beginning of the season that the final of this competition is in Prague, I told the guys: ‘Come on, we need to go there because it’s my home!’ so it’s a special motivation for me. I know the stadium very well as I went there at the age of ten!.”
