Speaking on Sky Sports News’ Ref Watch, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes West Ham United’s disallowed goal yesterday was the right decision.

The Hammers thought they had took the lead in the first-half away at Nottingham Forest.

Declan Rice slid in Said Benrahma who stroked the ball home past Dean Henderson. However, the goal was ruled out through VAR after Michail Antonio was adjudged to have ran into Orel Mangala.

The hosts then went on to win the game 1-0 with Taiwo Awoniyi scoring the winner.

Rice missed a penalty in the second-half and David Moyes’ side also hit the bar a couple of times.

‘I can understand’....

Gallagher, who has now retired, has delivered his verdict on West Ham’s disallowed goal:

“I watched this and I (initially) didn’t think it was a foul. I then watched it again I can understand why they have given a foul. He just absolutely poleaxed him when you see it.

“He leans with him arms and Mangala has no chance of getting out of the way.”

He added:

“He really does run into him. He changes his run and his arms are up so having seen a replay I fully understand why a free-kick was given on the recommendation of the referee to go to the screen.”

What next for West Ham?

West Ham have lost their opening two games of the season, having been beaten 2-0 at home to Manchester City on the opening day.
