West Ham recorded a 3-1 victory over Backa Topola in their opening Europa League game

West Ham United are aiming to record back to back wins in the Europa League as they travel to SC Freiburg in a highly anticipated group stage game. The Hammers have started their league season strongly with four wins from their opening seven games and they are keen to add to their trophy cabinet after a Europa Conference League triumph last term.

West Ham began their European journey with an impressive 3-1 home win over Backa Topola which saw them show resilience to fight back from a goal down. Freiburg similarly showed their ability to fight back from adversity and they recorded an excellent 3-2 away win over Greek giants Olympiakos.

A win for David Moyes’ side would leave them a step closer to the knockout stages of the competition but the London outfit may be forced to make changes as they cope with the demands of domestic and European commitments. With that in mind we take a look at all the West Ham injury news as they travel to Germany.

West Ham team news

Aaron Cresswell - out

Aaron Cresswell is yet to feature in the Premier League this season and he remains a long term absentee with a hamstring problem. A timescale on his return has not yet been determined but he is a definite absence for the Europa League contest.

Edson Alvarez - returns

Edson Alvarez was signed in a bid to fill the void left by Declan Rice after his departure for Arsenal. So far the Mexican has impressed in the midfield and has shown his ability to break up play and help prevent opposition attacks. He missed the opening game with suspension but is expected to make the squad for the Freiburg encounter.

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh - out

West Ham have most of their key players fit for their European tie but Frieburg have been hit with a few setbacks. One absentee is Daniel-Kofi Kyreh who scored two goals in nine appearances last term.

Christian Gunter - out

Eight-time German international Christian Gunter was a stalwart in Frankfurt which pushed for a Champions League place last term. He played 31 times in the 2022/23 campaign but has missed all of the games so far with injury due to a cruciate ligament rupture and a fractured forearm.

Michael Gregoritsch - doubtful

49-time Austrian international Michael Gregoritsch was a key goal scoring threat last season with 10 goals in 30 appearances. While he has also scored five goals in his last six games for Austria. He is a doubt for the game with a calf issue but manager Christian Streich claims the player will have a late fitness test ahead of the game.
