West Ham Player Ratings: 'Seriously impressive' 9/10 and 'big shift' from 8 as Brentford dumped out cup

Brentford made life hard for West Ham but the hosts are through to the next round of the FA Cup on penalties.

West Ham remain in with the chance of lifting silverware this season with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side booking a place in the FA Cup quarter final in dramatic style.

The Hammers dominated in the first half and went in 2-1 up at the break, but a leggy performance after the break saw the Bees haul themselves back into it. Jarrod Bowen and Igor Thiago were both at the double but it was Konstantinos Mavropanos and Alphonse Areola who were heroes on the night.

The defender netted the winner for West Ham with the shot-stopper standing tall to easily catch a risky Dango Ouattara chip. Here’s how the West Ham players rated over the 120 minutes.

West Ham player ratings v Brentford

GK - Alphonse Areola, 7

Forced into a couple good saves by Brentford. Looked a little bit stuck in the mud for the first goal and perhaps will feel he could have got a hand to the Brentford penalty in the second half, which wasn’t particularly well placed. Will have been delighted to see Dango Ouattara fluff his complacent penalty into his grasp in the shoot-out.

RB - Kyle Walker-Peters, 6

Started brightly but Brentford went on to find some joy down their left wing as the game went on with the full-back looking a little fatigued before his sub in extra time.

CB - Konstantinos Mavropanos, 7

Another who looked very leggy as the game went on, making that right side of the West Ham defence looking an accident waiting to happen. Not a bad night overall, though, and smashed home the winning spot kick.

CB - Axel Disasi, 8

West Ham are a much, much better side with Axel Disasi in it. A big shift from the Chelsea loanee, who had only played 465 first team minutes all season before the 120 tonight. Almost scored a screamer in the dying moments of extra time - that would have been some story, but his block to end extra time was just as good.

RB - Ollie Scarles, 6

Looked to be a potential weak leak in the first half but had very little help from Adama compared to what Bowen offers Walker-Peters on the other flank. Subbed at half-time.

CM - Tomas Soucek, 5

Came close to scoring from a set play on the stroke of half time but looked to be the weak link tonight. Surprised to see Kante come off before him. Skittled in his marking for the first Brentford goal, but needed help with too many opposition men for just one Hammer.

CM - Mateus Fernandes, 6

Really classy in the first half. Had the composure and quality to take the ball down and whip a mean ball into the box to help set up the first West Ham goal. His influence faded after that and he was anonymous at times in the second half.

CM - Mohamadou Kante, 9

That felt like the full arrival of Kante at West Ham in a seriously impressive showing well past his 20 years of age. The star moment came in a brilliant tackle to win the ball high up in the 32nd minute. That’s the sort of intervention that can inspire a team and indeed it did so - Bowen succeeding with a similar challenge moments later.

RW - Jarrod Bowen, 8

Bowen is a better player when his teammates are better players. The talisman will be in the right place at the right time, so long as the Hammers are creating the opportunities for him to get there. Took the penalty coolly and bagged a first brace of the season, but still drifted in and out of the game at times.

ST - Pablo, 7

No goal tonight but an important presence. Had won possession and drove his team up within minutes of kick-off, and made a nuisance of himself to allow the ball to drop for Bowen to score the opener.

RW - Adama Traore, 8

There’s a real belief in the stadium that something can happen when Adama gets running with the ball, but always a question over the end product - skewing a shot wide after a brilliant dart forwards early doors. Used his physicality to win the penalty, which Bowen converted. Some defensive hustle but not enough to help Scarles out. A surprise to see him taken off at half time.

Subs - Crysencio Summerville (8), Ezra Mayers (8), Taty Castellanos (7), Soungoutou Magassa (6), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (7), Callum Wilson.

In other news, Transfer West Ham fans are desperate for could be an impossible dream despite boost.
