Chelsea and Barcelona stars are on Ange Postecoglou’s radar ahead of June transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur are set to have a busy summer transfer window with Ange Postecoglou preparing to make key signings ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. The former Celtic manager had an impressive start to his career in north London, but the side have slipped to four successive defeats and are seven points behind fourth placed Aston Villa in the Premier League table.

Having hoped to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League competition, it now appears the Australian head coach will look to strengthen his squad, adding necessary depth to key areas, in order to challenge for a place in Europe’s most elite tournament for the 2025/26 season.

A report in The Telegraph has detailed that Spurs have two plans for the upcoming transfer window. The first is based on securing Champions League football, and the second will be brought into play if they fail to secure a top four finish, with the latter looking increasingly likely scenario.

Two figures who have been spotted as potential signings this summer are Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and Barcelona winger Raphinha. According to the The Telegraph, the England international Gallagher has long been on Postecoglou’s wish-list but the Lilywhites are now ready to make a move.

The Blues midfielder has a £50 million price tag placed upon him and the reports have suggested that Spurs are only willing to make a move for the 12-time England international if Stamford Bridge drop their asking price.

Gallagher, 24, has spent much of this season as captain of Chelsea with both Reece James and Ben Chilwell injured. As a product of Chelsea’s youth academy, any sale of Gallagher would act as pure profit, a fact that will not have escaped a side that could well struggle when balancing their books for the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

As well as Gallagher, Postecoglou has eyed up ways of adding quality to the wider areas with Barcelona’s Raphinha a key prospect. The Brazilian is, of course, no stranger to the Premier League having played two season with Leeds United - where he was an immediate fan favourite - and with rumours emerging that the club may listen to bids for him this summer, it may not be long before we see the 27-year-old back on English shores.

Since joining the Camp Nou side in 2022 for a fee that rose to £55m, Raphinha has made 62 La Liga appearances, scoring 12 times. He also won the Player of the Match award for Barcelona’s first-leg quarter-final Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain. The winger netted a brace as the Spanish club went on to win 3-2.

Spurs may well, however, encounter a similar cash issue when pursuing the Brazilian international with reports from Todo Fichajes suggesting Raphinha is available for a hefty £86 million.
