Tottenham target makes 'negotiations' claim as club make decision on forward
All the latest news and transfer rumours surrounding Tottenham as they prepare for Europa League action.
Tottenham are now preparing for their final Europa League group stage clash, against IF Elfsborg. Spurs will likely need to win to avoid a knockout stage play-off, while Ange Postecoglou may need to win to keep his job after that defeat to fellow strugglers Leicester City over the weekend.
In the meantime, Postecoglou appears to be getting backed with new signings, and the search for new additions continues with less than a week remaining in the transfer window. Here we round up all the latest news and rumours surrounding Spurs.
Gomes speaks
Tottenham have been linked with a move for Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, and the former Manchester United man has now spoken about his future, with his current contract on track to expire this summer. Gomes is said to be hoping for a fresh challenge next season, and he is already free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with a club outside of France.
“I’m aware of clubs inquiring about my situation, but I’m now completely focused on Lille,” said Gomes. “I want to finish the season in the best way possible and then we will see what happens, I’m focused on the present and not on negotiations.”
Fati interest
Tottenham continue to be linked with a move for FC Barcelona attacker Ansu Fati. Sport claim Fati has been told he can leave Barca by manager Hansi Flick this month, and Tottenham are said to be expressing an interest.
Fati could be available on a discount fee or on a loan deal, but he does have a troubled injury history which has stubbed his development after he burst onto the scene with Barca. Fati struggled to impress during a loan spell with Brighton last season, with injuries again playing a role in disrupting his campaign.
Spurs squad building criticised
Former Tottenham keeper Paul Robinson believes Spurs hurt themselves by building an unbalanced squad this season. “The squad is unbalanced, which I said at the start of the season,” he told Tottenham News.
“Looking at the players in the attacking areas – Kulusevski, Maddison, Bergvall, Johnson, Werner, Solanke, Odobert, that last one came out of the blue from Burnley. It’s so unbalanced. Dragusin was the only recognised centre-half before Ben Davies was granted fit again, but covering the full-back and centre-back areas has been the problem.”
