Tottenham latest injury news and return dates following Ange Postecoglou's major Dom Solanke blow
Tottenham have up to 10 players who could miss out on their next game against Hoffenheim in the Europa League on Thursday.
Tottenham are in desperate need of players fit from injury as they find themselves 15th in the Premier League table, eight points above the relegation zone. They lost 3-2 to Everton over the weekend, in a game which has added more pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou.
They face a trip to Germany to play against Hoffenheim in the Europa League on Thursday in their next match, before then playing against a struggling Leicester City side at the weekend, looking for their first league win in six matches.
However, Postecoglou’s injury concerns may have gone from bad to worse as striker Dominic Solanke missed the Everton game due to a knee injury that he picked up during the week. The former Bournemouth striker could miss several matches, although it is not yet clear as to just how serious his injury is. It left Postecoglou having to play Heung-Min Son up front against Everton in place of the England international.
Expected Solanke return date - Unknown
Micky Ven de Ven and Cristian Romero nearing a return
Centre-back Van de Ven could be set to make a return against Hoffenheim as he is getting closer and closer to fully recovering from a hamstring injury. It would be a major boost for Spurs, as the Dutchman was one of their standout players before suffering his injury in early December.
Furthermore, Romero could also return, as he is on a similar timeline for Van de Ven, which could mean that Postecoglou finally has his preferred centre-back pairing back, a much-needed defensive boost for the Spurs manager.
Expected return date - Sunday 26 January vs Leicester City
Yves Bissouma and Brennan Johnson
Midfield pair Bissouma and Johnson, also both missed the game against Everton, forcing Postecoglou to make a formation change to a 3-4-3. They are currently being assessed as Johnson has a calf issue and Bissouma picked up a knock in training.
Postecoglou said ahead of the Everton match: “Brennan has a bit of a calf complaint, and [Bissouma] is a bit sore as well. So, we're just waiting to hear on them.” It is unlikely that they will be out for an extended period of time, with Thursday’s Europa League clash a very real possibility for the pair.
Expected return date - Thursday 23 January vs Hoffenheim
Wilson Odobert
Midfielder Odobert has been out injured since November when he underwent surgery on his right hamstring. He has been recovering since then, and is getting closer to a return for Spurs.
However, it is not likely that he will return within the next two weeks as he will need an extended period in training to get back to full match fitness after at least two months in recovery.
Expected return date - Unknown
Rodrigo Bentancur
Bentancur suffered what appeared to be a serious head injury during Tottenham’s Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg win against Liverpool earlier in January. He was taken off on a stretcher and to hospital after the match.
Postecoglou said afterwards: “Good news. He was in hospital and did all the tests to make sure everything is OK. All good. He's back home, and he's fine. He is feeling good... Thankfully, it looks like a concussion and nothing more than it.”
Expected return date - Sunday 26 January vs Leicester City
Timo Werner
Attacker Werner is currently dealing with a minor hamstring injury that he suffered during Tottenham’s 3-0 FA Cup win against non-league side Tamworth over a week ago. He is not expected to miss an extended period of time, but it will likely be well into February before he makes a return.
Last week Postecoglou said: “He had a scan, he has a hamstring tweak, so he'll be out for three to four weeks.”
Expected return date - Sunday 9 February vs Aston Villa
Destiny Udogie
Full-back Udogie suffered a hamstring injury during Spurs’ 2-2 draw against Wolves in what was their last match of 2024. He is expected to miss a fairly long amount of time due to the extent of his injury.
Postecoglou said at the time: “Destiny, with his hamstring, looks around the six-week mark.”
Expected return date - Sunday 16 February vs Manchester United
Guglielmo Vicario
Spurs managed to find a replacement for Vicario in the form of Slavia Prague keeper Antonin Kinsky for a fee of £12.5m. He has come in for Vicario, who is expected to be out for a long period of time.
Vicario suffered an ankle injury during Spurs’ 4-0 win against Manchester City in late November, when he played over 60 minutes with a fracture to his right ankle - keeping a clean sheet.
Postecoglou said at the start of January: “He's on schedule. When it's a fracture, there's a set schedule for him being in a boot, how much weight bearing he can do, and then getting clearances along the way. So, he's still on the same timeline of the end of February.”
Expected return date - Wednesday 26 February vs Manchester City
