Tottenham player ratings vs Manchester City: 'fantastic' 9/10, plenty of 7s but one 6/10 in memorable win

The player ratings as Tottenham held on to beat Manchester City and reach the last eight of the League Cup.

Tottenham responded to their weekend league defeat with a massive 2-1 win over Manchester City in the League Cup. The win will ease the pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou, who has vowed to win a trophy in his second season at the club. Timo Werner and Pape Sarr scored for the Lilywhites on a night they started as underdogs but thoroughly deserved their victory, even though Matheus Nunes’s goal gave Pep Guardiola’s side hope. Despite City’s best efforts, Spurs held on for an important win.

Here’s how we rated the Spurs players:

Guglielmo Vicario - 7

Made a series of strong saves throughout the game.

Archie Gray - 7

Very strong and composed, especially given it was his biggest game yet as a Tottenham player.

Cristian Romero - 7

One of his best games in a Tottenham shirt; he was committed and resilient.

Radu Drăgușin - 7

Strong, solid, and uncompromising. Games like this show why Spurs worked hard to beat Bayern Munich for his signature.

Micky van de Ven - 6

Played at left-back and did a decent job before being replaced by Destiny Udogie due to an injury.

Pape Sarr - 7

Scored a well-taken goal and is finding form again after a challenging start to the season. Replaced by Bissouma when he ran out of steam.

Rodrigo Bentancur - 7

Used the ball well in the first half and continued to recycle possession effectively as the game went on.

Dejan Kulusevski - 7

One of the more underrated players in the Tottenham lineup.

Brennan Johnson - 6

Showed blistering pace and put in a lot of running. Would have liked to get on the scoresheet as well.

Dominic Solanke - 7

Played well but couldn’t find the goal he was hoping for.

Timo Werner - 8

Forced off due to injury but will be delighted with his goal.

Richarlison - 6

Missed a good chance after coming on and had a rather quiet game.

Bissouma - 9

Made a fantastic goal-line clearance to ensure his team held on to the win.
