Tottenham 'brilliant' injured £17m star spotted training ahead of Brentford and Liverpool
The Spurs injury crisis continues but one important first team star appears close to a return.
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was spotted in first team training on Wednesday morning as he edges close to a return from injury.
The fixtures continue to come thick and fast for Spurs and their beleaguered senior squad. Ange Postecoglou's side are in Europa League action against IF Elfsborg on Thursday before making the short trip to Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday.
Next week, there's the small matter of the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool at Anfield, before a tricky FA Cup trip to Aston Villa in the fourth round.
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper spotted in training
News of a potential Vicario return comes as a huge boost for the North London club. The Athletic reporter Jay Harris took to social media platform X to share a snap from training on Wednesday, in which Vicario could be seen in training.
The journalist wrote: "Guglielmo Vicario (at the front) is taking part in training with the rest of #THFC’s goalkeepers today Currently saving a few shots from the coaches with Antonin Kinsky."
The 28-year-old has been out of action since Spurs' 4-0 win over Manchester City in November but had teased an imminent return on social media in recent days. Vicario had shared a post with the caption 'not long now' as he steps up his recovery.
The shot-stopper has missed 17 of his side's games in all competitions, his absence coinciding with a crumble in form from Tottenham Hotspur. Postecoglou's side sit 15th in the league with five defeats in their last six.
Vicario had started the first 15 of 16 games of the season across all competitions before his injury, keeping four clean sheets in those outings. His only absence came when an unused substitute against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup.
Spurs paid £17.2 million to recruit the player from Emploi in 2023 and the goalkeeper has been a mainstay under Postecoglou. The Aussie manager has praised the star as he has taken to the top flight.
Speaking in December 2023, shortly after he arrived in London, Postecoglou said: "Vic was outstanding today with a couple of brilliant saves. He’s been brilliant from day one for us, and we haven’t always needed him like we did today.
“Other times, it’s probably one or two saves a game, if that, he’s been important in our build-up and in our organisation, but today we needed his goalkeeping. It wasn’t just the saves he makes. They’re so strong from corners and put so much pressure on the goalkeeper, and I thought he stood up really well.”
Ange Postecoglou ‘hurt’ by Spurs boos
Postecoglou has refused to blame the injury crisis for the recent downturn in Spurs form but has admitted the difficult situation currently presented to him. A chorus of boos rang out around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday following a 2-0 defeat to strugglers Leicester City.
Speaking after the match, Postecoglou said: "It hurts. It hurts a lot. The players are giving everything they can. That is all we can ask for as a football club and as a manager. They are trying their hardest and that is all anyone can ask for.
"When you're in this situation, they are trying as hard as they can and sometimes that doesn't give you the clarity in decision-making. I know it will turn. We'll get some players back, we were short again today but in the next couple of weeks there's some really important players coming back that I know will help this group."
In other news, QPR have landed a transfer blow to Spurs and Chelsea amid reports of a new contract for a rising midfield star.
