Tottenham Hotspur 'leading' transfer race to sign Championship winger - but Aston Villa have buy-back clause

Tottenham Hotspur are 'leading the chase' to sign a highly-rated Championship winger.

Tottenham are interested in Hull City winger Jaden Philogene, according to a report from Teamtalk - and they are thought to be 'leading the chase' to acquire the 22-year-old's coveted signature when the summer transfer window rolls around.

However, it may not be so simple. Aston Villa are interested in the player - and they have a complex, but exclusive, buy-back clause in his contract with the Tigers. They can only activate the clause if Hull achieve promotion this season - additionally, if another club puts forth a higher offer, they will be required to match it.

On Philogene's contract, Hull vice-chairman Tan Kesler said last September: "He’s not [Aston Villa's] player, he’s a Hull City player for sure, that I can tell you for sure. I’ve been open from the beginning and also you need to know that if we [are] promoted Villa have agreed to a buy back but only if we [are] promoted and we’re in the Premier League.

"They still have to agree with the player and – and this is very important – they still have to match if we receive another offer [from a rival club]. Anytime in Jaden’s contract, if we [are] promoted, they have the right to buy him back for a specific price, again – I’m underlining it – if there’s no other offers. So there will be offers."

What would Jaden Philogene bring to Tottenham?

Spurs have some exciting attacking players in their ranks, such as Dejan Kulusevski, Manor Solomon and Son Heung-min - but none of them can match Philogene's level of flair and unpredictability.

A lightning-quick winger with wizard-like dribbling ability, Philogene is capable of unlocking even the tightest of defences - and he can score some spectacular goals once he has done so. So far this season, he has scored eight Championship goals for Hull, registering six assists.
