Tottenham Hotspur poised to make big call on £22m star's future amid 'you never know' comment

Spurs are set to trigger the one-year option on a star player’s contract which will hand him his 10th season at the club.

Tottenham Hotspur look set to trigger the one-year option on the contract of forward Son Heung-min, with his current contract deal set to expire at the end of the season.

The South Korea international has spent nine years at Spurs since he joined in 2015 for a fee of £22 million from Bayern Leverkusen. At the time, this made him the most expensive Asian player in history.

Previous to that, Son had spent time at Hamburg in Germany after moving from South Korea where he began his footballing career as a youngster. Son has been vital to Spurs for the past nine years making 417 appearances, scoring 165 goals and providing 87 assists.

He last signed a new contract with the club in July 2021 which was set to keep him at the club until 2025 - however due to his deal holding an extension clause, Spurs have the option to keep him at the club for an additional season.

Son wants to bring a trophy to Tottenham Hotspur

The midfielder has helped Spurs to two finals in his time at the club, the Champions League and the EFL Cup, but hasn’t been able to win a trophy with the club who haven’t managed to do so for 16 years.

It has been a good couple of matches for Son and Spurs who managed to beat Manchester City in the Carabao Cup which dramatically increases their chance to land a trophy. Furthermore, Ange Postecoglu’s side then beat top-four contenders Aston Villa 4-1 in the Premier League on Sunday - a game in which Son contributed an assist for Spurs’ opening goal in the game.

When asked about his contract last month by the Telegraph, Son said: “I am fully focused on this year and just want to win something that everybody at the club – the players, all around – deserves, that’s what I’m working for.

“In the future you never know what will happen, but I will give everything for this club because it’s been almost 10 years and I give everything. I still have a contract with the club which is the very important thing and I just want to give everything until my contract [expires].”

Spurs signed Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray in the summer who, aged just 18, could develop into a long-term replacement for Son once the 32-year-old eventually leaves north London. However, in the near future, Gray could be heading out on loan in the January transfer window. It is also worth noting that Gray, despite playing in midfield for Leeds United, has largely been used in a defensive capacity by Postecoglu thus far.
