Tottenham Hotspur are in talks to secure the long term future of one of their star players as they bid to avoid a repeat of the Harry Kane saga. Club captain Son Heung-min has been a crucial part of Tottenham’s team since his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and he has scored over 10 Premier League goals in all of the last seven seasons.

The South Korean international has continued that good form this campaign in the absence of Kane and he has hit three goals in his side’s opening five matches. Manager Ange Postecoglou is a huge fan of the attacker and is determined to hand him a contract extension which will take him beyond the current expiry date of 2025.

Speaking at a forum event this week, Postecoglou told Tottenham fans: “Everyone knows he’s a fantastic footballer but he’s just a brilliant human being. For any sort of manager, when you’re looking for leaders in a group and they’re all different types, firstly what kind of person they are is really important when setting up a team.”

Tottenham owner Daniel Levy was faced with a difficult scenario in the summer when he sold Harry Kane to Bayern Munich for a fee of around £100m, as the player’s contract had been due to expire the following year.

90min reports that an agreement between Tottenham and Son is expected to be reached by Christmas, although it is possible that negotiations could be completed within a few weeks.

The news will undoubtedly come as a huge boost to the Tottenham faithful who are flying high after a run of four wins from their opening five games. Spurs will be aiming to continue that strong run of form when they travel to the Emirates to take on arch-rivals Arsenal on Sunday.

Although Arsenal also enter the game high on confidence with an equal run of four wins from five games, while they are also aiming to build on an impressive 4-0 victory in their Champions League opener. Son has previously scored six goals in 16 appearances against The Gunners and the most recent of those came in a 3-0 win back in May 2022.
