Bissouma’s injury lands at a time when Spurs are only recovering from the blow of losing captain Hugo Llrois to a knee injury that will keep him out for at least six weeks.

The midfielder was signed from Brighton and Hove Albion this summer for £25 million and despite an underwhelming start to life in north London, the Mali international has eight Premier League starts and has shown glimpses of his brilliant in game reading and passing that made Tottenham go all out for him.

A club statement read: “We can confirm that Yves Bissouma is to undergo surgery on Friday to repair a stress fracture to his left ankle.

“A time frame for his return will be determined after surgery. He will begin rehabilitation with our medical staff as soon as possible. Get well soon, Yves.”

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte himself only returned from a gallbladder operation on Thursday having missed the 1-0 win over Manchester City. He will be incredibly disappointed to have lost to Bissouma in a month where their season could be shaped.

In Bissouma’s absence Senegal international Pape Matar Sarr and Englisng youngster Oliver Skipp are likely to deputise for him.
