'Mic Drop': Tottenham star hints at imminent Ange Postecoglou news at full time

Tottenham Hotspur goalscorer Brennan Johnson expects a blockbuster interview from Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson is expecting a blockbuster interview from Ange Postecoglou after the north London club won the Europa League in Bilbao on Wednesday night.

It was a cagey meeting between Spurs and Premier League rivals Manchester United with just one goal making the difference. That was scored by Johnson just before half time, with some questions over whether it may be an own goal having clipped Red Devils defender Luke Shaw on the way in.

It’s a huge win for Tottenham Hotspur and will go some way towards making up for a thoroughly underwhelming Premier League campaign. Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou had promised a trophy in his second season and makes good of his word in Spain.

It remains to be seen whether the Aussie remains at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Postecoglou himself has admitted he is unsure about his future. Speaking to TNT Sports at full-time, Johnson was asked what the win might win for the boss’ future.

Brennan Johnson expects Ange Postecoglou ‘mic drop’

He said: “Listen, he’s done his job. He said he wins in his second year and he has. If there’s ever time for a mic drop I think it’s now. I’ll be looking forward to the interview. I can’t thank the manager enough for how much trust he’s had in us. Some of the performances haven’t been good enough but he’s got everyone up for it and today it shows.”

Speaking ahead of the Europa League final, Postecoglou remained coy about what may happen after the match. He said: “I’ve said to the lads from day one that nothing is guaranteed in life, nothing is guaranteed in sport.

“You just need to try and make sure you take every opportunity before you. That’s what I have done my whole career. I’ve been in this position before where the big game was the last game I managed. It’s not unusual territory for me. I have always navigated it pretty well because, for me, nothing is more important than my responsibility for this football club and its fans. Me, the players … our mind is only on one thing and that is to create something special.

“I qualified for a World Cup [with Australia] and left. I won the treble with Celtic and left. I won at Brisbane and left. It’s more common than you think.”

Ange Postecoglou gives verdict on future ahead of Europa League final

When pressed about his future, Postecoglou added: “My future is assured. I wouldn’t be the first person who changes job. We all change jobs. I am sure you’ve had more than one job.

“I have got a beautiful family, I’ve got a great life. I’ll keep on winning trophies until I finish – wherever that is. Don’t worry about my future. My future is not intertwined with anything. My future is assured provided, God willing, my health remains, my beautiful family is beside me, my friends … there is nothing wrong with my future, mate. Don’t stress. Sleep easy tonight. I’ll be OK.”

Several candidates have been linked with replacing Postecoglou, who has seen Spurs finish in their lowest ever Premier League position this season. Fulham manager Marco Silva is one of the names touted as an option, alongside Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner.

Johnson reflected on the season when speaking to TNT Sports on the pitch at Bilbao. He said: “I can’t explain it. I’m so happy right now. This season hasn’t been good at all, but I swear, not one of us players right now care about that. This is what it’s all about. This club hasn’t won a trophy for 17 years, this is what it means, it means so much. All those fans get battered, we get battered, for not winning a trophy and not winning anything. I’m so happy.

“Ever since I came here, Tottenham have been a good team but haven’t got it done. We got it done. Tottenham Hotspur finishing 17th in the Premier League isn’t good enough but we’ve had an unbelievable Europa run and the fans have been so good every home and away game. Coming here, I thought they had the edge on the United fans to be honest. Ever since we got to the stadium, they were all here singing our name and got us through the game.”
