Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario suffered an injury against Manchester City.

Tottenham have received a major injury blow as goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario suffered a fracture to his ankle during their 4-0 win against Manchester City at the weekend.

Despite the clean sheet and excellent result, Vicario spent a large portion of the game with a fracture to his ankle and will now miss and extended period of time. It is not clear yet how long Vicario will be out, but he has had to undergo surgery meaning that his recovery will likely be over a long period of time - this means Ange Postecoglou may need to find a replacement to step in for Spurs.

The squad currently has two more goalkeepers with veteran Fraser Forster the likely backup to Vicario, he has made two appearances in the Europa League so far this season for Spurs so remains match fit.

The other option for Spurs is 25-year-old Brandon Austin who doesn’t have a lot of experience playing in the first team as he is yet to make a professional appearance for Tottenham having come through the club’s academy. He would be more of a risk than Forster.

Due to Postecoglou’s lack of options in goal, the Spurs manager may decide to look at the free agent market to find a short-term replacement for Vicario that they can sign on a cheap deal as there are a few experienced options available and on the market.

Keylor Navas

Former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Navas is available as a free agent and perhaps stands as the best option for Spurs, given that they could pick up anytime. He also has previous Premier League experience, making 17 appearances for Nottingham Forest on loan from PSG in the second half of last season.

The 37-year-old could simply be a solution to bring in for the remainder of the season to replace Vicario for as long as the Italy international remains out of action.

Edgar Badia

Former La Liga journeyman Edgar Badia is also available and would be a slightly younger alternative to the likes of Forster and Navas as he is 32 years old.

He spent a long period of his career at La Liga side Elche and developed a reputation for being an excellent penalty-saver, something that could come useful in a cup competition and Spurs’ pursuit of their first trophy since 2008.

He has been without the club since the summer when his contract at Elche expired and could be picked upon the cheap, however, he has less experience than Navas and has never played in either the Premier League or the Europa League.

Loris Karius

If Spurs are looking to add a goalkeeper with vast experience in England then Loris Karius remains the obvious choice despite his history of making mistakes for both Liverpool and Newcastle United.

Karius was the back-up at Newcastle for the past two seasons and so could come in and provide an alternative to Forster. He was Liverpool’s shot-stopper before they signed Alisson and has enough experience and knowledge of the Premier League to provide Spurs with a valuable asset - despite his reputation of making crucial mistakes.
