Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp was full of praise for the defender during Spurs’ 4-0 win.

Tottenham put in one of their best performances under Ange Postecoglou as they thrashed Manchester City 4-0 for what was City’s fifth defeat in a row, something that has never happened under Pep Guardiola.

Goals came from James Maddison, Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson handing Spurs the win but former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp reserved a special mention for defender Ben Davies, who managed to keep striker Erling Haaland contained throughout the match.

Davies had come into the team as a centre-back even though he’s a full-back because of the injuries that Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are currently dealing with, meaning Postecoglou chose Davies to step in and he didn’t disappoint.

Redknapp said on Sky Sports after the game: “I think Ben Davies deserves a very special mention…He’s come on in a couple of games when Romero or Van de Ven have been injured, and I thought he was very assured. He’s one of those sorts of players who doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

“He can fill in at right-back, left-back, he had to go in at centre-back against one of the most ferocious centre-forwards in world football and handled it perfectly.”

Fellow pundit Micah Richards was also full of praise for the Welsh international as he followed by saying: “What did he do? What did he do? He dropped off, he used his brain, that’s exactly what he did. He got tight when he needed to. I just thought he was outstanding.”

Could Ben Davies continue to feature for Spurs?

The only reason why the 31-year-old made just his second Premier League appearance this season was due to the injuries to Van de Ven and Romero.

However, following his impressive outing, Postecoglou may decide to trust Davies more often. He will likely start against Roma in Spurs’ next game in the Europa League on Thursday, as neither Romero or Van de Ven will be likely to return from injury.

However, Postecoglou had said before the Man City game: “Romero won't be right for tomorrow's game. We're hoping he'll be right for next week.” So the defender may come back in for Spurs’ next league game against Fulham.

Davies could well be the casualty if Romero returns, unless Postecoglou decides to play him over natural centre-back Radu Dragusin after his excellent outing against City on Saturday.
