Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has urged the Red Devils to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane this summer. The club are reportedly currently in talks over a surprise move for Burnley striker Wout Weghorst.

United have been on the search for a new forward since Cristiano Ronaldo left the club before the World Cup and they have previously been linked with Kane. With the 29-year-old’s contract in North London set to expire in June 2024, Ferdinand has encouraged a potential move to Old Trafford.

Speaking on his Vibe with Five YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “Get Harry Kane in. Spurs fans, I’m sorry. You’re not going to win anything. He’s not going to win anything at Spurs. They’re in a bit of turmoil at the minute.

“Man United, if you’re going to go in the summer: ‘Let’s go and find a number nine for the next three or four years to hang our hat on, to get 20-25 goals a season every year,’ where are you going? You’re going to have to pay big money for Harry Kane. But at least you know you’re getting a man who gets 20-25 goals a season. So Harry Kane can’t be going anywhere but Man United.”

Kane has become one of the world’s best strikers during his time with Tottenham, netting 198 goals in the Premier League as the third joint top goalscorer in top flight history. The forward came close to joining Manchester City in 2021 when he expressed his desire to leave the club after Pep Guardiola’s side tabled a staggering £127 million transfer bid. However, Kane failed to secure a move away and remained at his boyhood club, though took a while to regain the trust of his faithful supporters.

While it will still take a lot to lure Kane away from Spurs, his price tag will certainly have dropped as he approaches his 30th birthday with only a year remaining on his contract. While United are yet to provide any concrete interest for Kane despite Ferdinand’s demands, Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in the England captain.
