Ally McCoist has warned Tottenham Hotspur fans not to be too quick to judge Ange Postecoglou, who has been linked with a move to north London to take over as the next permanent head coach. Sky Sports has reported that talks between Spurs and the Greek-born manager are expected to take place this week.

Postecoglou, who is currently the manager at Celtic, has been given permission to speak with Tottenham over potentially taking over the reins from Ryan Mason. The club parted ways with former boss Antonio Conte back in March after exits from the Champions League and FA Cup.

Before his departure, Conte delivered a brutal assessment of the team, describing them as “selfish players” and stated they “don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart” into their performances. Shortly after his rant, the Italian left by mutual consent.

With Postecoglou now named the favourite for the Spurs job, Celtic are reportedly already working on his successor, with Brendan Rodgers and Jesse Marsch both named as potential suitors. McCoist has stressed that he feels the north Londoners are in no position to be criticising the links with Postecoglou.

“If I was a Spurs fan, I would be very guarded about criticising anybody,” the Rangers legend said on talkSPORT. “You look at the great managers they’ve had recently, and they haven’t had any real success. I’m talking about Conte, I’m talking about [Jose] Mourinho.

“The job is absolutely massive and they’ve had some big names previously that probably haven’t taken Spurs the way that the fans have wanted.”

Tottenham will be eager to build on their disappointing eighth-place finish at the end of the 2022/23 season. As well as new manager talks, the club are already eyeing up new players on the transfer market but there is also the question mark over Harry Kane’s future to address as well.
