Manchester United’s home clash in the Europa League with Real Sociedad went ahead last night even though there were attempts to make the environment reflect the mood of a mourning nation.

The EFL have confirmed two matches on Friday night have been postponed as part of the mourning plans but there is generally an expectation that more games would be called off.

Play was suspended on the first day of the PGA Championship golf at Wentworth when news of the Queen’s death was announced, and the European Tour confirmed there would be no play today.

A meeting between stakeholders is currently ongoing but the expectation is that the government will leave the decision to governing bodies to gauge the mood.

One of the key factors is how tight the calendar already is given the World Cup and the recent coronavirus pandemic which has affected the flow of football and caused financial loss to clubs.
