What Manchester United's Mason Mount has said ahead of Chelsea return this week

Former Chelsea star Mason Mount will return to Stamford Bridge for the first time after his controversial move to Manchester United in the summer. The 25-year-old ended a 14-game barren run without a goal with a neat finish at the GTech Stadium before United were pegged back late on, leaving Brentford with only a point. 

Mount however enjoyed his best game in months and will now return to Chelsea, a club he came through the academy and earned the respect and admiration of the fanbase before leaving last summer. There will be little time for emotions though on Thursday night, with Manchester United eight points behind fifth-placed Tottenham and 11 behind Aston Villa in fourth. 

Mount has so far failed to replicate the form that made him one of the sought after youngsters in English football, helping Chelsea to winning the Champions League. But he's vowed to finish the season on a high note. 

He said after scoring his first goal and ahead of the game at Stamford Bridge: "Mixed feelings, but I’m proud to celebrate my first goal for this club! We’ll continue to work on finishing the season on a high. Thank you for all the support."

Chelsea needing points

Chelsea could be 13th by the time a ball is kicked at Stamford Bridge on Thursday if results elsewhere go against them. The target of finishing in a European spot could disappear if they suffer a defeat against Erik ten Hag's side. 

But United themselves are struggling, they were played off the park by Brentford and will need to be better if they are to keep their hopes of finishing in a Champions League spot alive.

Both teams have been consistently inconsistent this season and this game remains evenly poised and difficult to predict.
