'If he does his part': Moises Caicedo warns Chelsea wonderkid will have to work hard to succeed

Chelsea signed Kendry Paez from Independiente del Valle in 2023 and he will join the club when he's 18 years old next summer.

Moises Caicedo says Chelsea staff are excited about the prospects and talent of Kendry Paez but warned it would take a lot of self-application on and off the pitch for the wonderkid to fulfil his enormous skill.

Caicedo himself has seen the chasm between playing for Brighton and Chelsea after signing for a record fee of £115million last summer. This week, it has emerged that Paez who is regarded as a growing star in South American football is under investigation by The Ecuadorian Football Federation after a video footage appeared to show the 16-year-old partying with two teammates in a New York strip club while away on international duty.

Earlier in the campaign manager Mauricio Pochettino laid down the law to Chelsea’s young players after admonishing Noni Madueke for being caught partying while he was injured.

And now Caicedo who is away on international duty with Paez admitted there was palpable excitement and anticipation from Chelsea about Paez even though he'd need to apply himself properly.

Caicedo told Elfutbolero.com in Ecuador: “They talk a lot about him, more like all the Staff, who are always watching him in the videos, who want to have him here now.

"The time he came they wanted him to stay because everyone knows that he is great and if he does his part and dedicates himself every day, in training and outside, he will be a total great."

Kendry Paez the next big thing

Chelsea believe the midfielder is going to be an absolute superstar and that is why they spent £17.27million on a 16-year-old. He's even been to Stamford Bridge to train but what turned heads was that he scored on his debut for Independiente del Valle, becoming the youngest debutant and scorer in the Ecuadorian top flight.

He's still yet to turn 17 but has six caps and a goal to his name for his country. When he joins next summer, Chelsea are likely to take a closer look at him before deciding if he should head out on loan to Strasbourg or stay with the first team for his development.
