Medical latest

Fernandez has been given permission to undergo a medical in Portugal, as per a report by the Daily Mail. Chelsea are said to be ‘hopeful’ of getting the transfer completed this evening.

The Blues are prepared to smash the British transfer record to lure him over to Stamford Bride. That’s according to Sky Sports, who claim the London club are willing to meet Benfica’s hefty £105m (€120m) release clause.

Structure of the deal

As per Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol (see tweet below), Chelsea want to pay the fee over the course of six installments over the course of five years. However, his current club want want the money in three payments in two years meaning there is still some wiggle room needed in this one.

Other options?

Chelsea have enquired about the availability of Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer today, according to Sky Germany. He appears to be on his way to fellow Premier League side Manchester United instead as they look for a replacement for the injured Christian Eriksen.

Still on

Fabrizio Romano has tweeted that the deal is ‘still on’. There is apparently still work needed in the negotiation process though meaning it could go down to the wire.
