Struggling £36m Chelsea signing tipped for January exit as Serie A side look to land fourth ex-Blue

The Chelsea forward has scored just one goal in 12 Premier League games this season.

Chelsea are looking to offload a couple of players during the January transfer window in order to keep in accordance with PSR rules after a busy summer transfer window under Enzo Maresca.

The Blues sit fourth in the Premier League table, 10 points off league leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand on Chelsea. Maresca’s side beat Wolves 3-1 in their last match on Monday night, their first Premier League win in six games.

They head to the Etihad this weekend to face a resurgent Manchester City side, looking to get their first win away at City since May 2021, when Chelsea beat Pep Guardiola’s side after City already had the Premier League title wrapped up.

Joao Felix could be set for Serie A January move

Chelsea forward Joao Felix began his second spell at Chelsea in the summer transfer window after he joined from Atletico Madrid following the Blues’ sale of Conor Gallagher the other way. The Blues signed Felix for £44m over the summer, he spent a year on loan with Chelsea in 2023 for a short-term loan, under now West Ham manager Graham Potter, and then interim Frank Lampard.

According to CaughtOffside, AC Milan are keen to sign Felix with Chelsea being prepared to let him leave for the right fee although they only signed him to a permanent deal in the summer transfer window. The report suggests that talks have already taken place with Milan offering a fee in the region of £34m, which is deemed too low for the Blues as things stand.

Felix scored four goals in 20 games in his first spell with the Blues in 2023, but it hasn’t been as consistent this season. The Portugal international has made 20 appearances so far in all competitions for Chelsea, scoring seven goals, although four of those came in the Europa Conference League.

According to the report, Chelsea would like to loan Felix out to Milan ideally, but the Serie A side have been discussing a possible clause giving them the option to buy. He would be the second likely Premier League signing for Milan in January as they look set to bring in Manchester City full-back Kyle Walker on a loan with an option to buy.

Felix could join become the sixth former Chelsea player to join AC Milan

The Portuguese forward is the latest Chelsea player to be linked with a move to the San Siro, but he wouldn’t be the first ex-Blue to join Sergio Conceicao’s squad in Italy.

Milan already have five former Chelsea players, including three Chelsea academy players. They signed striker Alvaro Morata from Atletico Madrid in the summer, who spent three seasons at Stamford Bridge, scoring 24 goals in 72 appearances.

They also have a former Champions League winner with the Blues in Christian Pulisic, who spent four years with Chelsea between 2019 and 2023. He signed for AC Milan after leaving Chelsea for a fee of £17.5m. Academy products Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori are all at AC Milan too, with the latter rumoured to be keen on a move back to the Premier League.

Both Chelsea and Newcastle United have been linked to signing Tomori, after his four-year spell at the San Siro. He’s made 162 appearances for the Serie A side, scoring seven goals and one assist. However, after the Blues recalled defender Trevoh Chalobah from Crystal Palace, it looks less likely that they will try to bring in Tomori, so a move to Newcastle could be more realistic.
