David Ornstein drops major Chelsea transfer update as player bound for Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have recalled one of their players from a loan spell as they seek to bolster their options for the rest of the season

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is reportedly poised for an immediate return to Stamford Bridge after his loan with Crystal Palace was cut short by the Blues.

The defender joined the Eagles on a season-long loan on August 31 but that agreement is set to end early, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein. Chalobah has been with Chelsea since the age of nine and has previously spent time on loan with Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town and Ligue 1 side Lorient. The report from The Athletic claims Chalobah is no longer available for Palace as they take on Leicester City in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Glasner reveals recall worry

Just this week, Palace boss Oliver Glasner conceded that Chelsea had the option to recall Chalobah and revealed there was uncertainty if he would continue with Palace for the remainder of the campaign.

"It’s a tricky situation," Glasner said. "I always want to be honest. Chelsea has the possibility to call him back from loan. There’s a little bit of uncertainty at the moment: will they do it, when will they do it? We need clarity, he needs clarity. Let’s see [whether he plays]. Maybe Trevoh is involved, or not. He wants to stay here, but it’s a decision Chelsea can take. We are passengers; we are not the pilot who is flying the plane.

"My wish and Trevoh Chalobah’s wish is that he stays with us. Chelsea loaned him to us to give him minutes, to improve his game. This is what he did. But I think he’s not finished. It’s a one-year loan deal. But we’ll see."

Chelsea short on defenders

Earlier this month Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca revealed that Wesley Fofana was facing a long time out with a hamstring injury. Maresca said: “Unfortunately, Wes will be out for a very long time. He could be out for the season, yeah. We don’t know exactly. He could be out for part of the season.”

Meanwhile, Axel Disasi looks set to leave the club after being left out of the squad for the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth due to talks over his future. Juventus, Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen have all been linked. Josh Acheampong was named in the starting line-up against the Cherries as Maresca explained the reasoning for his decision. He said: "He's doing well. We said from the start he was doing well and as we've said many times with young players you need to find the right moment. He's good on the ball and off the ball, he's a humble guy."
