Chelsea are thought to be eyeing a reunion with England star following three month long summer transfer saga

Chelsea are reportedly hopeful of bringing Crystal Palace star and England international Marc Guehi back to Stamford Bridge in January, causing a huge blow to Newcastle United. The Magpies have long been in pursuit of the 24-year-old centre-back, having four bids rejected this summer - one of which was reported to have reached £65m.

As this figure still came below the Eagles’ desired fee of £70m, the Palace board could not be budged and Guehi stayed put in Croydon. He has gone on to play every minute for Oliver Glasner so far this season.

With Guehi’s contract currently set to expire in 2026, failure from the Magpies to sign the England international in January could prove disastrous. It had been reported that a January move up to St’ James’ Park could very much be on the cards for Guehi, with Eddie Howe hopeful of securing a cut-price deal due to the centre-back’s contract situation, a new threat has now emerged.

According to Football Insider, Enzo Maresca’s squad are said to be keeping tabs on Guehi’s situation, despite the fact they welcomed two centre-backs this summer transfer window in Tosin Adarabioyo and Aaron Anselmino.

It would not be the first time Guehi has been on the books in SW6 having moved from his boyhood club to Selhurst Park for £20m in 2021. He has since gone on to make 115 appearances for the south London club, 111 of which were starts. He was also England’s stand-out performer in the Euro 2024 campaign earlier this summer and was part of Lee Carsley’s Nations League squad in the recent international break.

Guehi’s professionalism, talent and loyalty were recently rewarded with his club head coach giving him the captain’s armband for the season. He led the side as they recently held Chelsea to a frustrating 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca’s squad, on the other hand, exponentially expanded this summer and at one point over 40 players appeared to be on the first team books. Four defenders were brought into the mix but it would appear that the Blues still wish to strengthen their central options at the back. With one win, one draw, and one defeat so far this season, the Blues will now prepare to take on Bournemouth as the Premier League returns this weekend.
