Chelsea 're-ignite' interest in £85m Liverpool star following reported transfer veto in 2024

Chelsea had previously held an interest in the Liverpool attacker who the Reds paid £85 million for in 2022.

Chelsea are in desperate need of help as they have seen a recent slip in form. Enzo Maresca will be keen to add a couple of players during the January transfer window, in order to catch up to the likes of Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in the Champions League places.

They have already made one transfer move this month, as they recalled centre-back Trevoh Chalobah from Crystal Palace, due to the injury to Wesley Fofana, which is expected to keep the defender out until towards the end of the season.

The Blues have also been linked with signing a striker during the transfer window, especially considering recent reports that have linked Christopher Nkunku over a move to Bundesliga side Bayern Munich.

Chelsea could revive interest in Liverpool striker

One attacker that the Blues have been linked with in recent days is Liverpool man Darwin Nunez, who they had previously held an interest in over a year ago. According to Journalist Simon Phillips on Substack, Chelsea have revived their interest in the Uruguayan, who recently scored two goals in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Brentford at the weekend.

The report states that the Blues were going to sign Nunez in 2024, however, the deal was vetoed by then-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who wanted to keep the 25-year-old at Anfield.

Nunez signed for Liverpool in the summer of 2022 in deal worth up to £85m from Benfica. He has since seen a lot of inconsistency for the Reds, amid his struggled to find regular goal scoring form.

He has made 123 appearances since joining Liverpool, scoring 39 goals, and contributing 21 assists. Due to the Reds’ current title charge, they may be reluctant to sell Nunez to a rival unless they can find a replacement during the January window, as they won’t want to lose any depth in attack.

Chelsea also linked to Bundesliga striker

Nunez isn’t the only striker that Chelsea have been linked to in recent days, with reports also connecting Maresca’s team to Bayern Munich man Mathys Tel, who is currently negotiating a new deal at the Allianz Arena.

Due to the links between Bayern and Nkunku, many have suggested that the two clubs could agree on some form of swap deal, which would mean that Tel moves to Stamford Bridge. The 19-year-old has struggled to get regular game time under Vincent Kompany due to the fact that Harry Kane remains Bayern’s starting striker. The England captain has scored 16 league goals in 16 games for the German giants this season.

A recent transfer update emerged suggesting that Tel does not want to leave Bayern, however, if they were to sign Nkunku, he would get even less time on the field, meaning that he could change his mind in favour of more minutes at Chelsea.
